Kinne JU Scholarship

THE KINNE SCHOLARSHIP

The Dr. Frances B. Kinne Scholarship will further the mission of the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus (JCC) by supporting up to two (2) academically and musically-gifted alumni of the JCC with a four-year, full tuition scholarship to Jacksonville University. Dr. Kinne has been a dear friend and benefactor of Jacksonville University for over 40 years.  She first served JU in a unique capacity as the founding Dean of the College of Fine Arts in 1961. Since then, she has dedicated an enormous amount of her time, service, and support to JU, and in doing so, has been instrumental in building the Jacksonville University we know and love. Dr. Kinne’s leadership includes serving as University President for 10 years, and ultimately being named the University’s first Chancellor, and later Chancellor Emeritus.

The JCC was founded in 1995 at Jacksonville University to fill a need for a children’s music program in the area.  Led by Dr. Frances B. Kinne, then Jacksonville University President, the plan to create a local choir was implemented by Dr. Jon O. Carlson and Jim Taylor, who served as the first conductor.  In that first year, JCC had only 16 voices.  Since then, it has grown to serve as many as 1,000 singers annually with performance choirs and outreach programs.  More than 35% of JCC's singers are awarded either partial or full scholarships each year.  From 16 singers in 1995, JCC has developed into one of the nation's most important providers of music education, enriching the lives of singers and audiences around the globe.

Up to two (2) scholarships may be awarded each year.

“I was in the Jacksonville Children's Chorus in 1999-2002. It helped me to build long lasting friendships and a greater love for music. To this day I still remember the fun times and great concerts we did in the JCC. I think this organization is great for children of all ages, it helps build confidence and friendships.”

Bethany, Former Member

“Being a part of the JCC has not only allowed Christian to experience the fun, excitement and pleasure of singing with friends, it has also helped him to develop a sense of confidence that comes from life skills of hard work and perseverance.”

Elaine Bourne, JCC Parent

“Music plays a major role in the full development of a child. Not only does it enrich lives, it also serves as a pathway for students to express themselves and explore new ways to communicate with others. For 20 years, kudos to the JCC for molding the lives of young artists, and I look forward to the next 20 years.”

Tim Cost, President, Jacksonville University

“The Chorus expands your musical horizons and helps you grow as a person. You are surrounded with other young people who have something in common…their love of music. I have learned that music does, indeed, bring people and cultures together. The music we sing brings people hope for a better future of understanding and cooperation.”

Jasmine, 16, Touring and Concert Choirs

“Music is such a valuable part of life. The way it enriches one’s life and encourages creativity, I do not believe anything else can do as much. We in Jacksonville are certainly blessed to have the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus.”

Scott C. Snyder, President, Compass Consulting Group
