A Singer's Story

The Gift Of Music For Maura

Over the past 25 years, thousands of children that have been shaped by the programs offered by the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus. In celebration of those singers, we would like to introduce you to Maura.

Maura joined the JCC in 2018 and was invited to join the elementary group, Training Choir, and has now advanced through Treble Choir and into the most advanced Concert Choir. Her mother, Amy, opened up to us about what the experience with JCC has been like for her and the family:

“For our family as a whole it has been a great experience to see how Maura has grown as a singer, and has grown more confident in herself, and that she is willing to try new things without hesitation. Being part of the JCC has helped develop Maura’s voice, as well as how to read, understand, and appreciate music. She has learned how to project her voice, which helped when she had a solo in her 5th grade Christmas play, and she’s become more confident in her abilities and improved her ability to set goals.

During the Spring [of 2020], participating in the JCC helped Maura have a sense of normalcy, she still got to see her friends virtually each week which meant a great deal to her mental health. Now that they are able to participate in-person it has been great, the social aspect is very important to Maura and for both her father Eric and I, as we too enjoy talking with the other singers’ parents and checking in on each other.

Without the scholarship program, it would have been very hard for Eric and I to be able to afford to give this opportunity to Maura. Singing means so much to her, one of her new goals is to sing at the Naval Academy where she dreams of going to college, she knows she has to work hard to get there and she is starting now with the JCC. Being given a scholarship has meant a lot to us as a family, we are able to provide this unique experience to Maura and it gives Eric and I the opportunity to volunteer with a great organization. Us volunteering each week is our way of saying thank you and we appreciate what you have done so that our daughter can continue to be provided with top notch instruction.”

Every year, children like Maura require scholarships to sing in a year-long choir and have the once in a lifetime opportunities the JCC offers. You can support these singers by donating to our tuition and scholarship fund. Thank you for joining us in our mission to change lives through the power of music!

“Music is such a valuable part of life. The way it enriches one’s life and encourages creativity, I do not believe anything else can do as much. We in Jacksonville are certainly blessed to have the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus.”

Scott C. Snyder, President, Compass Consulting Group

“The JCC is more than just a chorus; it is truly a life-changing experience. The Chorus has opened me to new experiences, provided me with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and helped me discover singing is not just one of my interests but rather a lifelong passion.”

Emma D., JCC Alum

“Being a part of the JCC has not only allowed Christian to experience the fun, excitement and pleasure of singing with friends, it has also helped him to develop a sense of confidence that comes from life skills of hard work and perseverance.”

Elaine Bourne, JCC Parent

“Music plays a major role in the full development of a child. Not only does it enrich lives, it also serves as a pathway for students to express themselves and explore new ways to communicate with others. For 20 years, kudos to the JCC for molding the lives of young artists, and I look forward to the next 20 years.”

Tim Cost, President, Jacksonville University

“It is gratifying the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus program covers so much of what is not available to children in the Duval Public Schools. The children who have an opportunity to participate in your Chorus are very fortunate to have this outstanding musical training available to them. The entire community benefits from your talent and that of the children.”
